Hard to believe another year is coming to a close.....
Striper fishing has been good. The weather has started to stabilize and with that I have been catching good fish from the middle to the back of creeks with flat lines and planer boards. The lake temperature has been around 54 degrees which is perfect for pulling around baits on Planner boards and flat lines.
I have been pulling gizzard shad and trout, somedays one works better than
the other. With the trout I have been using 17lb mono main line with a 15
lb fluorocarbon leader. Mixing things up when trolling live Trout with a
combination of free lines, weighed free lines and planner boards has worked very
well in getting good bites. I’ve been running my trout 50 feet behind the planner boards and 60 to 100 with the trout on the weighted and un-weighted flat lines.
As for gizzard shad I haven’t been getting fancy like I do with the trout on
line. Running a big 20lb mono main line and a 17lb fluorocarbon leader to a
stinger rig with a 2/0 or 3/0 circle hooks depending on the size of the shad to
size 2 treble hooks. I DON’T weight these shad as the will swim deep on their
own. When running a spread with shad I go 30 to 40 ft behind the planner boards a long flat line at 110ft and two short flat line at 50 and 60ft.
If all else fails the Umbrella rig is still working when pulled over points and
humps on the main lake and in the creeks at 90 to 110 feet back at 3mph.
