It might take a bit to find the big groups, so trolling lead core until you find a good group of fish has been pretty successful. There are bunches of single and doubles between 30 to 40 ft that you would normally drive over as you look for that big school. I recommend pulling lead core while looking for the large schools, it has helped me pick of a few extra fish. I have been pulling a 2 ounce buck tail with a 4.5 inch paddle tail.
The bigger groups of fish that will eat the heck out of a downlined herring have been from 40 to 80ft deep over a 100ft bottom. When you find the good thick schools they have been sticking around for a little longer, resulting in a good number of boated Stripers. The afternoon bite has picked up and a little better than the morning bite at this point.
